What the hell did you say yesterday?

08/28/02 12:32 PM PST

It's Wednesday, and that means it's "Lessons Learned" day.

This weeks lessons learned:

  • Wisconsin cheese soup is usually served blisteringly hot (hello soup, goodbye taste buds and roof of mouth!)
  • Food at Silverwood Theme Park is usually served cold (cold hamburgers with cold cheese... nummy!)
  • When your shoes get filled with water and you continue to walk around in them for several hours... well... suffice it to say "don't do that!"
  • Registering a child in a new school will always take longer than you budget time for
  • A quick upgrade to an old machine = massive headache
  • If you run a webserver, everyone will beg for free hosting: it is expected that you will say "yes" (regardless of your bandwidth or server strength). If you Say "no", you're a miserly bitch.
  • When you leave the top down on your car, a cat will mark your seat as his by spraying it with his scent.
  • The day that you need to run a Data Validity test for your biggest customer will always be the day you can't find your access card (or badge) for work.

I'm hopefull that these little observations will help you in your life.

The "name my cat" contest is over.

Me-ouch! This damn thing has claws!
    Rest in peace, little fella

We had settled on the name Cisco (because we're both geeks), but it turned out to be a short lived name.

Cisco became ill from something they call Feline Upper Respiratory which is apparently the cat version of kennel cough. He died last Saturday.

We did go out and adopt two other kittens, Bondi and Switch (collectively known as "The Terror Twins"), as Cisco was a pre-birthday gift for my wife, and her birthday was the day Cisco died.

    Our civilization in decline:

Breaking with my usual tradition of avoiding such places at all cost, I ventured into Wall*Mart yesterday to help Darkstar buy a new computer desk.

    Amazing!

From the look of the clientele, every trailer park in Spokane must have been empty, as all the residents appeared to be wandering the isles of this particular store. I have never seen such an amazing array of people in desperate need of braces, toothpaste, and soap. At one point during our adventure of discovery, some genetic throwback who must have lived on a strict diet of generic pork-n-beans and government cheese experienced flatulence of a magnitude so great that I prayed for death (the truely frightening thing was... there was no one in our direct vicinity... so the cloud of gut-wrenching stench must have traveled some distance to reach us... I fear for the lives of those at the epicenter).

While wandering the aisles in search for some air that had not been tainted by my new special friends anal emissions, I ran across many wonderful things:

  • Fans with remote controls (so you don't have to miss any of the Jerry Springer show)
  • Large framed images of Elvis and the Last Supper
  • Shoes made of substances that nature never intended (one pair of which, I swear was made of recycled school bus seat covers).
  • Slim Jims (in nacho cheese flavor)

I think I'm going to hang out there more from now on. Every time I start to feel that life is getting me down, one look (and whiff) of the local "talent" at Wall*Mart will make me feel better about myself. But next time I go, I'm bringing the digital camera.

And you thought you had a boring life.

My fourth of July was rather conservative. We went to a friends house for a BBQ and beer fest and came home around 5 pm. Rather than going down for the city fireworks display, we decided to stay home and enjoy the silence (my kids are currently in Las Vegas for 34 days with their Grandmother).

Saturday was my nephew's pseudo birthday party (his actual birthday is the 4th of July). We spent the afternoon at the Sister's house and did some shopping.

Sunday was the 2nd Annual Relay for Life "Ride for Life". About 300 motorcycles left from 7 locations and ended up at Cavanaugh's Bay at Priest Lake. There was a band, food, and some pretty damn nice door prizes (of which I won nothing). I didn't bring the camera this time, so there aren't any images of the run (my bad, sorry).

I've been accepted into the beta for the latest rev of my most favorite of programs, Popup Cop.

Normally... I don't download any of the crap that's available out there, but this little utility is different... it actually works. I don't get popups, those annoying timed scripts, etc.

After playing with the program for 2 days of it's free 30 day trial, I got out my credit card and paid for it... it's that good.

The beta software has even more functionality and blocks more annoying things than you can shake a stick at.

It's worth every penny of the $19.95 I paid for it.
