No respect

At work, it was decided that we need a presence here during nights. We have had a few issues with connectivity to the internet, causing our customers frustration when they attempted to connect to our servers to get their data.

I volunteered (since no one else would) to start the graveyard shift. Each person in our group has to work 4 weeks to see us to the end of the year (after that they’ll re-evaluate it and possibly hire someone just for this shift).

Iv’e been working the 11pm to 7am shift for a couple weeks now, and my body is finally accustom to it.

Tonight when I come in, I find an email from my boss, asking that I change my shift to come in later (and therefore stay later in the morning). Nice that no one called me and waited till I showed up to let me know. I’ve also found out that my turn ends on friday, leaving me with one more week later in the year (I’m low man on the totem pole… so I’ll probably get stuck with Christmas).

I can not understate how much this pisses me off. I’ve already given up my family life for the past two weeks, leaving my wife to deal with everything (at least I think I still have a wife and kids… haven’t seen them for a couple weeks). I wanted to pull all 4 weeks at once so I could be done with it. Now I have to get used to sleeping at night again (which will take a week before I’m anywhere near 100%) just so they can toss me arbitrarily on graveyard again whenever they feel like it.

I understand the need for flexibility in our group, but I feel I’ve been extremely flexible already and now I’m being abused. I also know that there are thousands of unemployed people out there who would gladly take my job, and that I should be grateful to be paid.

Is there a point to this post… probably not. I’m just venting some frustration. Feel free to ignore me (I’m used to it).

Perhaps I wouldn’t be so cranky if I had gotten enough sleep today. We needed to pour a concrete footer in my front yard for a decorative brick wall, so I was out in the sun for a while.

  1. Just remember that half of all bosses are assholes and the rest are just c**ksuckers!

  2. Actually… I got it pretty much all worked out. I get my next week and then I’m done with the shift for the year.
