Friday is my day!

September 19, 2003 By: bio Category: General

Lessons learned this week:

  • The worse you feel, the larger the workload
  • The women at Fantastic Sam’s are a flirtatious bunch
  • Carl’s Jr fast food tastes like something that came out of a goats ass
  • Support at my ISP is staffed with a bunch of lying bastards.

It’s been an interesting week (to say the least).

My back has flared up again, making the act of sitting, walking, and lying down rather painful. I have an appointment next Tuesday with my Doctor (who will then refer me to a specialist – another 2 week wait). From what I understand, theres been some scaring on the neural sheath that’s causing pressure. That takes surgery to fix (read: another month of lying on my back).

I finally got around to cutting my hair today. I went to the Fantastic Sam’s in the Valley Mall. I had been there several times before and they’ve always treated me nice… but I found out theres a story to that. I had ridden my motorcycle at one point and was removing my riding gear in anticipation of getting my hair cut. The stylist saw I was removing my chaps and said “Don’t take those off.. I can work around them”. “Riiiiight” was my reply. Apparently she went about 10 shades of red (I was taking off my chaps and didn’t notice).

A few months later, my sister took her husband to the same place because he wanted a hairstyle similar to mine. When she was trying to describe it to them, she mentioned that they did my hair. They remembered me and told her that I was “hot”.

    I can live with that.

Oh… and it looks like my ISP may have gotten things corrected on their end finally. They had lost their DNS servers at one point (though they gave me several explanations on the problem and specifically said it wasn’t a damage issue when I asked). It took days for them to bring new ones online (with new IP addresses). They also removed their phone number completely from their website (to keep people from calling in I assume). The only reason I know it was fixed is because we were running a network scanner from work on my ISP (and got the new addresses). They haven’t contacted the users yet (at least not me) to notify them of the changes that need to be made on each users router (so I’m sure theres lots of people who are still down).

I’m thinking this is a bargaining chip for my contract (which comes up again next month).

  • ISP Blues (or, “Fix it, you stupid bastards!”)

My ISP has been having troubles.

For the second time in a week, they’ve lost DNS.

This took me a while to figure out, because while I was unable to get anywhere by name but could via IP on my windows machines (which points to the DNS servers being down), I was able to get out via name from my linux box.

That didn’t make a whole lot of sense.

I finally got curious enough to look into my conf file on the linux box and discovered that at one point I had added another DNS server to the mix (must have done that when there was a problem in the past).

So… I’ve been calling my ISP, but their either not open yet or not answering the phone.

My contract with them ends in October and may end completely if they don’t give me a damn good reason to stay with them. I pay for a year at a time, and I’m not paying the typical DSL rates, I have a corperate package (with multiple static IP’s). I’m going to start calling around to see if I can get the same thing from someone else.

Of course, if I do that, the owners of the 40 some-odd domains I host will need to change the DNS entries for their domain. Should be interesting.

    Home for the day

As my back is absolutely useless, I’m at home today (hence, the lack of webcam activity for the one or two of you who care).

I’ve got an appointment to see my doctor tomorrow morning about it. From the way things feel both in my back and in my leg, they’re probably gonna have to cut me open again (as it’s getting to be the way it was before my last surgery).

Oh boy! Wheeee! Can’t wait for that!!

So I’m going to spend the day in my chair, watching daytime TV, and moving very little (unless I get the itch to play a little BF1642 DC… then you probobly can find me over at Thaiguy’s server… specifically 206.66.81.7:14567). Oh yeah… I live the rockstar life!

For those of you who don’t partake in the BRHF (the official forum of wwbd), Eve posted this link yesterday: Caffeine Machine (how friggin’ cool is that?!?)

Opportunities (Lets make lots of money)

I was approached a couple days ago with an interesting proposition: replace a product that’s currently in existence with one that is more compatible with current environments and contains a ton of new features that make it more business oriented.

After speaking to my brother-in-law… I believe we’re going to take a run at it (his eyes lit up when I told him about it)

The initial calculations for revenue from the sales looks good, and the residuals from monthly service contracts are pretty solid. Without going into any details on exactly what it is, there is the potential for making > $800,000 initially… $240,000 a year on service. I can live with those numbers.

I’ll let you know how things pan out.

    Happy Tuesday!

It’s the aftermath of Monday, and I feel it.

I spent most of last night attempting to buy things for my eldest son. He’s grown beyond what he used to like in clothes (which is whatever we bought for him) and has developed his own individual sense of style. In plain english… those $8 t-shirts no longer work for him… he needs the $30+ ones.

    Damn teenagers!

It was fun shopping with him, but I had problems paying for it. Apparently my bank’s link went down so my debit and credit cards wouldn’t work (and I hadn’t brought my checkbook). Since the link was down, I couldn’t even get money out of the ATM. Thank God I had my other cards with me (though it’s pretty embarassing when your card doesn’t go through… they just stare at you like you’re a bad person).

I’m still working on the site to attempt to make it more Netscrape friendly. If you use Netscape and you’re having issues with how the page displays (ie. It’s all white with black text). I’ve done a number of things to attept to correct it, changing lines of code and adding a .htaccess file so that Netscape parses css files properly.

    Sigh…

No link of the day today. I’ll try to find something for tomorrow.
