Eat that, spammer bastards!
The old blog has been drilled over the past few days with spams for some online casino, viagra, and other such nonsense. I’ve deleted aprox 800 comments since saturday.
Since I had to work graveyard last night, I started looking at ways to fuxor the spammers in their quest to drill my site without having to resort to using WPBlacklist. I found one.
When you attempt to post a comment, an image is generated that displays a random number. You then must type the number from the image into a box. No matching number… no post. And, since it’s an image, the spammers script cant just grab it and insert it into the field… someone’s gonna have to actually look at it (and it changes every time you post a comment).
I’ll do a writeup on it and post it over at wordpress for the other kids.
Nice!
1I’ve seen this before, on other sites…don’t they have some way around it? Like run it through a OCR and put it in the passcode box?
2supercool!
3Sure… if it was a common thing, they could just OCR the image… but it’s a one-off. At this point in time, only two domains run it (myself and slackeruncensored.com:. Even if I loaded it on every domain on my server, that’s not enough domains for the spammers to justify modifying their code to hit us.
4So far, so good!
Excellent work Mr. Techpants
