Hillyard Pride!
My eldest son attends Rogers high school here in Spokane. Yesterday, they had an issue.
Apparently, the Principle, Carole Meyer, had told the students and faculty they could no longer use the word “Hillyard” when taunting other teams because she clams it had a derogatory meaning.
Several hundred students started their day yesterday by standing outside the school in protest, waving signs that read “Hillyard Pride” and chanting the same.
The event was quite organized. The student council had even gotten a permit from the city to allow the protest. While there was a police presence, it was a very peaceful, if not loud, demonstration.
My thoughts: WHAT THE FUCK! Telling students that they can’t mention the part of town that they live in because the name is derogatory?!? Why not just tell them they live in a steaming cesspool and because of that they themselves aren’t worth shit.
Sure, Hillyard isn’t exactly the best part of town, but the majority of families that live there take pride in their neighborhood. What kind of message is Carole Meyer trying to send to the students and families who live and work here?
My son said that he overheard several members of the faculty state that they’d like to join the protest, but were afraid it would end their careers.
When the majority of the student body and the faculty agree that there’s a problem, you better believe there is.
Of course, this isn’t my only complaint against Principle Meyer. She’s done several other things since coming to the school that are questionable. She has changed student schedules, overriding the electives they are allowed to take, in order to place them in other classes to increase the schools funding (basically vetoing the decisions of the students, counselors, and parents). She’s also placed the school in lock-down after the bell rings, leaving only two doors open.
I believe that Principal Meyers owes an apology to the students and the community.
Y’know…I hope Principal Meyer (and better, District 81) is getting a copy of this post…somehow.
This Political Correctness bollocks has gone too far. Hillyard is as you say both the one of the rough ends (I-90 Corridor might be worse)…but also a place where people take some pride (unlike the I-90 Corridor).
If she cannot do her part to help improve the area, she should step down…and I hope District 81 is taking notice.
1Well, Well, this Hillyardite too will send a lil message to the principle and yes probly a few polititions too. I grew up a Hillyardite. I graduated from shitty ole Rogers High….GO PIRATES. And hey what ever happened to making fun of the people who live in DOG TOWN any ways. Kidding dog town we love you too! This woman has to be a REPUBLICAN no doubt. Spokane would not exist the way it does today without the Hillyard family and their railroad. More later as I rant my ass off to the people who need to hear my voice ;)!
2My comments to the City and school:Hello Your Honorable Mayor, I write you today as a person who was born and raised in Spokane, and grew up in Hillyard. I currently live in Juneau Alaska and both of my parents still live in Spokane. I graduated from Rogers High School. It is my understanding that at some event the student body was chanting HILLYARD PRIDE. These kids were told by the Principal at Rogers that Hillyard Pride was a derogatory term. Now, Rogers school student body are known as the Jolly Rogers Pirates. I would say that is a more derogatory term than Hillyard Pride. Hillyard has a rich history for Spokane. Without Hillyard and its railroad industry, Spokane may not be what it is today. I feel this Principal owes an apology to the students and residents of Hillyard and Spokane. I have voiced a complaint about this with both the Superintendent of District 81 and the Principal of Rogers High School. I feel you should get involved as well. What kind of message is she sending the students of Rogers by calling their neighborhood a derogatory term? Community and school pride are very important. I would not hesitate to say that Carole Meyer, the principal of Rogers does not live east of the railroad tracks in Hillyard, nor in Hillyard itself. These kids of Rogers High deserve an apology, the community of Hillyard deserves an apology, indeed the City deserves an apology. I say throw a rally for the school and stand up for the civic pride of Spokane and Hillyard. Perhaps Principal Carole Meyer needs to step down and move to a more suitable community for her attitude! This matter needs resolution as soon as possible. I copy of this letter has also been sent to Mr. Brian Benzel District 81 Superintendent. Thank you for you time sir.
3I was protesting, but thought it would be smart if I had attended my clases being as part of the protest was about being locked out…I did not feel like getting locked out. But I believe another protest will be held on Thursday of next week. All I have to say is thanks for the support!
4Spam sucks – no doubt about that. If anyone finds solution let me know.
Cheers
5WOW! Heard back from District 81 they stand firmly behind the principle as you get f—– in the ass! They have even given her an award! Yeah!
6Who knew Spokaneites were prideaphobes, homophobes, white supremisits and just plain ole, good ole, down homo counrty folk. I did I did LOL. Ok not all people in Spokane, just the few, the proud, and the in power ones. But lets see, in the last 12 or 16 months …..Indians got attacked by a group of whites, the Mayor gets railroaded out of office by the current Mayor, its bad for the community to have pride in thier neighborhoods, and the water supply is becoming a fossil fuel. Hummm I wonder why I ever moved out of Spokane. LMAO
