Spam makes my ass angry
My email address has been inundated with incredible offers lately.
“Grow your penis to horrific size”, “Steal Cable TV”, and “XXX HOT HOT TEEN SLUTS” have become the mainstay (up to 50 per day… some multiple times).
Now I’m pretty damn sure I never actually requested any of that nonsense, but they don’t seem to believe my sincerity when I “unsubscribe” from that crap (I believe that just flags the account as active and they hit it harder).
So… I’ve killed off the pimpdaddy@whitewomanblackdog.com email address.
If you would like to email me, theres a lovely link on the lower right that goes to my hotmail account, or your can send it to bio at whitewomanblackdog.com (remove the “at” and replace with @… take that, you email address harvesting bastard bots!). Oh.. and if you’re looking to update your joke mailing list with the new address… DONT! (Hi dad!).
In non-related news, we’re doing a DVT test here at work (aka: the Toné Show).
What that means is I work incredibly long and stressful days, making sure that our system here and mirror and work as a disaster recovery system for a utility in Pittsburgh. In the case of an actuall disaster out there (and it’s happened), I’m the guy to calculates how much power you’ve used so the utility can send you a bill. Pretty exciting stuff (or not).
Link of the day: Rocket Team vatsaas (thanks Ray!)
Hi there Bio,
Fresh from my very first single-handed linux install you will be amazed to hear :)) Thanks for the fill-in host offer by the way 🙂
Re your spam problem, and since you are your own host on a linux system (I assume), have you ever thought of filtering your mail server-side using the spamcop blacklist or ORDB?
I use both on my linux box and it’s fun watching all the reject messages in my maillog 🙂
The spamcop list gets rid of all the reported spam instances they have and the ORDB list gets rid of known open relay-transmitting emails. Cut down a hell of a lot of my spam.
Spamcop instructions are here:
http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/290.html
ORDB is:
http://ordb.org/faq/#usage
really worth a try!
Hope you are relatively pain-free today.
cheers
Eve
1That’s actually going to happen with the new server I’m attempting to put together.
Unfortuantely, I’ve got an old release running at the moment that A) won’t upgrade and B) doesn’t support any of the new spam tools.
Hopefully we’ll get it up and running in the next couple of weeks (this server will become a firewall at that point).
