Work, Withdrawl, and Nostalga

June 11, 2003 By: bio Category: General

I’ve been fairly busy the last few days.

There’s been an issue at a customer site that’s required my attention. After spending the past week or so working on it, things looks like I may have it whipped today (if they will answer their phones or email that is).

I’ve also quit taking my painkillers. As I’ve been on them for over 9 months, and they’re quite addictive, my body is most unimpressed with me at the moment. There have been a lot of the typical withdrawal symptoms (shakes, general crappy and drained feeling, vomiting, and of course… my personal favorite: explode-o-ass!). Wheeeeee, fun!

My brother in law came over for a while yesterday. As we were both fairly bored, we got into a deathmatch (which was great fun, as I haven’t done that since we quit hosting lan parties a year ago). Of course, he got all nostalgic, so we installed DOOM (something I haven’t played in years). It was a riot!!

I wish I were more entertaining today, but honestly… I feel like crap and am headed back to bed. I leave you with this:

Life in the fast lane

I was sitting on the back deck of my house, having a smoke and enjoying a cup of coffee when I heard screaming in front of my house.

Being the nosy bastard that I am, I grabbed my cell phone (in case I needed to call 911… again!) and ran for the front door. Apparently the neighbors across the street had witnessed some asshole running over their cat and then taking off (actually… he never slowed down).

This is a real problem on our street. There’s a golf course at the end of the block, and people have a tendency of driving rather fast to and from it. The speed limit is 25 mph (40 kph), but people don’t seem to pay much attention to that. 40 – 50 mph (64 – 80.5 kph) is pretty normal (can’t be late for your round of golf!!). Unfortunately… there are a lot of kids in the area and it’s a matter of time before one of them get hit.

We’ve called the police, we’ve called the city, but since the golf course is owned by the city, they’re hesitant to do anything that might make people want to golf elsewhere (like pull them over and write tickets or install a stop sign or a speed bump to encourage people to drive the speed limit). My neighbors have gone fairly ballistic over the speeding… spraying cars with hoses when they come racing down the street, yelling at them, and in some cases, walking out in front of them and stopping them to have a word.

Danger!

In other news… I’m getting central air today. My next door neighbor, Ben, is picking up all the parts at cost and we’re installing a 3 ton unit on my house (total cost for everything: $730… cheap!). As the weather has gotten warm, and I have a ton of huge windows that face south… this will be nice!

Link of the day: The Official Ninja Webpage. Don’t settle for a cheap imitation, insist on the “official” one! (now with more crappy midi files!!)

Boredom sets in (again)

Being home sucks. It’s nice not having to deal with the hassles and stresses of work, but man… am I bored.

I did get a couple of new CD’s yesterday… Dave Gahan’s Paper Monsters and Martin Gore’s Counterfeit2. Both are good by their own respect, but neither has the energy that the two artists combine to create Depeche Mode.

I also got a movie that I’ve been wanting for forever on DVD: Brazil. It’s a little funny, a little quirky, and very dark. I liken it to Monty Python meets George Orwell (which isn’t that far off, since it’s directed by Terry Gilliam). Pick up your own copy or rent one NOW!

Why the hell are you still here… go!

Now I’m going to assume that you ran and got the movie, watched it, and are ready to resume your life. Let’s continue….

The new server is coming along. Most the hardware is ready (still need a hard drive of sufficient size). I’ve managed to scrounge up a nice little PIII 500 with ample memory… it should rock (as the server you’re currently leeching on is a P200 with nothing fancy about it). Hopefully we’ll be able to get the OS installed and the toys ready soon.

Finally (there’s always gotta be one more thing…), the 15th Annual Chicken Run is next weekend. “What the hell is a Chicken Run” you ask… this is a Chicken Run (well… last years, anyway). I can’t go this year *grumble* because I’m still recovering from my back surgery, but many of the people I know are. Bastards… all of ’em!

No link today… you’ve been naughty.

Yup… I’m a dumbass

I just got off the phone with my neurosurgeon’s office.

I had called to verify the date/time of my post-op appointment and found out that I’m not allowed to return to work until “after” this appointment.

Opps!

Either they had mis-spoken earlier, or my wife and I are both idiots. Either way, they were kinda pissed off at me for attempting to return to work last week (an attempt that only lasted 2 and a half days before I decided it was in my best interest to go home). So now it looks like I’m to stay at home until after the 12th of June.

In other news… I finally got my car back. It still less than perfect, but after them having it a full 15 days, the job they did is the best they can do. At least my car was clean this time (inside and out). They didn’t replace the glass where the tinter had scratched it, nor were they able to keep it bubble free, but damn it… I’m tired of waiting on them. I’m chalking this up as a learning experience. I’m also not buying a car from them in the future (and warn others to do the same). This was my second purchase from them and will be my last.

The Matrix – Reloaded was relatively cool. There was a 10 minute sex scene that didn’t add anything to the movie (besides an “R” rating) that they should have cut out, but other than that… it was worth seeing (if you want massive spoilers, may I suggest this?)
